Pre-Tensioning Method:

In the pre-tensioning method, the steel tendons or wires are tensioned before the concrete is cast. Once the concrete gains sufficient strength, the tension is released, transferring the stress to the concrete through the bond between the steel and the hardened concrete. 

Features: 

Tension is applied before casting the concrete.
The bond between steel and concrete develops naturally as concrete hardens.
Requires prestressing beds and forms.
Commonly used for precast bridge girders, sleepers, and short-span bridges.

Post-Tensioning Method:

In the post-tensioning method, ducts are provided inside the concrete through which the tendons are placed. After the concrete has hardened, the steel tendons are tensioned using hydraulic jacks and anchored at both ends. This introduces the desired compressive force into the concrete member.  

Features:

Tension is applied after the concrete has hardened.
Requires ducts, anchorages, and jacks for stressing operations.
Commonly used in long-span bridges, box girders, and segmental construction.
Allows greater control and flexibility in on-site conditions.
